Nando's Shades

Posted on 10 April 2014

So first things first me and my friend Tony welded all the frames together ready for the weave, they had to be strong but (reasonably) light. Next I had to split around 1000 hazel rods, some I'd coppiced myself and the rest I'd collected from various coppicers around the country. Next job was painting the split side 5 different vibrant colours. Last but not least was the weave, I split and weave the hazel while its green (recently cut) when its at its most pliable, then it dries in its set position.

This was a really fun & interesting commission as I don't get to use hazel that often in my projects, hopefully there will be more to come......
